Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences

The Mediterranean Center for Arts and Sciences is a dedicated Study Abroad Institute located in a completely restored 17th century palazzo in the historical center of the ancient Sicilian city of Syracuse, steps away from the Mediterranean Sea. MCAS offers a range of liberal arts classes every semester which enable students to explore the diversity of the Mediterranean World from a unique perspective. Field excursions are an integral part of classes at MCAS, making use of the school’s rich surroundings and Sicily’s grand past. Students are able to enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate throughout most of the year, as Sicily boasts more sunshine annually than any other spot in Europe.

MCAS offers a genuine immersion program that enables our students to truly experience the culture of Italy and the Mediterranean.

SicilyCity of Syracuse, Sicily

The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily’s strategically desirable location has set the stage for a colorful past. Inhabited since prehistoric times, Sicily has been shaped culturally and physically by each of its rulers, and the resulting mixture of architecture and tradition represents the whole of Western civilization’s history and culture. The city and province of Syracuse boasts a wealth of archaeological and architectural remains, ranging from Classical to Baroque and from Gothic to Arabesque, reflecting the uniquely diverse and oftentimes overlapping historical narratives of Sicily. The historic center of Syracuse is located on the small island of Ortigia, separated by bridge from modern Syracuse and home to The Mediterranean Center for Arts and Science.
